Apocalyptic fiction is my favorite genre, and Madness fit the bill perfectly with its twist on the end of the world. In Madness, something has happened to the animal population. Animals attacking other animals and people. Mr. Williams, our protagonist, is an author of the apocalyptic genre, and is smack in the middle of it when things go south. M.L. Banner takes his time setting up the many characters. He gives them a personality, and provides a good feel for the world in general. With the Williams’ are on a cruise headed back to the states the shit really starts to hit the fan, after narrowly escaping animal attacks while in Spain.

I was glad to see Ted Williams written as regular guy with a common phobia, making him a regular guy. There are many characters who add to the mess going on and helped to keep the story moving along. The pace was steady and at every turn a new level of craziness happened during the five days that elapsed in the book. As if the animal attacks aren’t enough, we get a second apocalyptic event to enjoy! I won’t spoil the surprise, but it’s good and it wasn’t expected.

As with all the books by M.L Banner, he builds them from a solid base of science. I find it enjoyable and think this makes his stories more believable. I was thrilled to learn there will be three books in this series. I’m ready for the next one and the wait is already too long.
