Children have been turning up missing in Budapest and there was an attempted kidnapping at the Istvantelek train station yesterday. After chasing down a suspect who had a small child with them, Rurik was able to tear a button from the suspect dressed as a clown. This isn’t much to work with but it’s more than Rurik has had in the past. Rurik works as the head of security for the Zorka Cyrka Circus. He isn’t sure if the suspect is a clown from a circus or possibly someone using the clothing as a disguise.
To make his day even more challenging he has a wedding event to prepare for. The ringmaster’s wife Zora, leader of the Bloodwalkers, is set to marry three young brides and everything must be perfect. Rurik doesn’t need any more obstacles with such an important ceremony taking place at the circus. These women are looked up to and are important people and the marriage ceremony must not be ruined.
Sylvie is nervous about marrying a man she hasn’t met. As she takes her place on the stage Zora says she will bring death wherever she goes. She is shocked and little does she know how true this statement is. Rurik continues searching for the child killer while more strange occurrences continue as the circus travels from city to city. Rurik is no closer to finding his suspect and more of the circus crew are on edge than ever.
L.X Cain keeps the reader guessing who is behind the clown disguise and what their intentions are. Someone is after these girls and who and why is tied to the mysterious clown. L.X. Cain gives an interesting and intriguing mythology to the Bloodwalkers. She has created a set of monsters that will stop at nothing to get the young brides and children. Their need for the young and healthy is gruesome. The story has a good pace, a well thought out plot, and overall a really an enjoyable read. The monster in the clown costume is something out of a nightmare. It was great to see a strong female character that wasn’t the stereotypical lady in need of rescue.

Lightning flashes. Another child disappears…
Zorka Circus’s big top roars with laughter and cheers, but when it moves on, children vanish.
Circus Security Chief Rurik suspects a killer hides among the performers, but they close ranks—they’ve always viewed lightning-scarred Rurik as the monster. He must find the culprit before anyone else disappears and his home is destroyed by the murders.
Into Zorka Circus comes the Skomori clan, despised as gravedigging ghouls. A one-day truce allows bloodwalker Sylvie to marry. Instead, she finds a body. Alerting others will defy her clan’s strict code, break the truce, and leave her an outcast.
When more bodies turn up, the killer’s trail becomes impossible to ignore. Rurik and Sylvie must follow the clues—even if they lead to something unimaginable…
