The Dead Lands by Dylan J Morgan was my first experience with his writing and I loved it. The Dead Lands is a story that takes place 100 years after the apocalypse, which in this case is a nuclear war on the planet Hemera. On the sister planet of Erebus our main character Lane and a small group go on a rescue mission to Hemera to investigate a signal from the president from a 100 years ago. They believe they are to find the former president and help him restore his world. This is what they are told by Lane’s commander but the commander has an entirely different agenda in mind for Lane and his group. All of the details about Hemera that Lane is told are lies and the mission goes sideways from the moment they arrive. There are tense scenes where the action has you on the edge of your seat. With well-developed characters (who you care about, despise, root for, root against and hate) it has all the elements for conflict and a great adventure. The book is hard to put down from start to finish, there is plenty of action, and the story pulls you in and doesn’t let go. I found myself cheering for the characters and gasping during many of the action filled scenes as our group makes their way to find the president. There are many surprises along the way as the story progresses to the conclusion. This is a great read and I can’t remember having devoured a book so quickly before. Dylan J. Morgan does a great job with this book leaving me wishing I had discovered him sooner. I will be reading his other books and know I have found a new solid author to read and follow.
