But Dean’s group’s exploitation of rare earth minerals deep in the caves unleashes an horrific contagion that has rested frozen and undisturbed for many millennia. Fleeing the terrors emerging from the caves, Dean and Bethan and their rival teams undertake a perilous journey on foot across an unpredictable and volatile landscape. The ex-friends must learn to work together again if they’re to survive… and more importantly, stop the horror from spreading to the wider world.

A propulsive horror thriller––fast-moving, frightening, and shockingly relevant—this adventure will grip you until the final terrifying page.

Among the Living was another fine effort from Tim Lebbon. His works are often thrillers that sit squarely in the science fiction and horror world. Other titles like The Silence and The Last Storm paint a world that is on its last legs. Among the Living exists in a similar world and touches on the topic of climate change and the damage we have done to earth. This theme isn’t new for Tim Lebbon, The Last Storm showed us an example of what the future might hold if the status que remains.

Here in Among the Living we meet two groups of activists who are hoping to slow down the damage that has been done. Their methods can be extreme, but humans can be stubborn when change is needed. The possible end of the world through a virus/organism thought to be extinct is frightening. Who knows what lays frozen in the coldest corners of our planet. When that something is no longer frozen and essentially ‘wakes up’, who can predict the outcome. This is exactly the where our cast of characters are caught. Between a rock and a hard place with no good choices, only necessary ones. Among the Living gives you a good dose of horror along with some frightening science fiction. Tim Lebbon’s descriptions of creatures from a time long gone are truly frightening. If sci-fi horror, like The Silence is your thing, then I recommend Among the Living. Many thanks goes to Titan books for this advanced reader copy.
