P. Mattern – Strident House Review

Review copy provided by the author in exchange for an honest review

Strident House starts off with one of main characters named Luke who is living with his elderly mother.  His mother is dead and Luke isn’t aware due to his limited mental capacity.  Luke is a 34-year-old man with the mental capabilities of a 4-year-old.  He doesn’t understand why she appears to be sleeping instead of getting him some dinner.  His younger siblings Kit and Brandon have just learned she has passed and are on their way find him a new place to live.  Little do they know their mother has already made arrangements for him to live at the Strident House.  Strident House is a facility for the mentally less fortunate and Luke’s mother made arrangements for his care when she no longer could.  The Strident House has a rich history and was once a tuberculosis hospital.

Strident House is a really good paranormal story mixed in with the death of Luke’s mother and all of the strange sightings.  Luke and Kit both have strange experiences and see odd things that are tied to the history of the facility.  I really enjoyed the way the author mixes real life events and history in to the back story of Strident House.  If you can get past all of the sex talk and scenes between various characters on both sides of the fence Strident House is a pretty good ghost story.  I didn’t think this added much if anything to the story, it felt like an add-on and left me wanting more substance and action.  The characters felt a bit flat and it was hard to connect with most of them.  Kit and Bran join a group of paranormal hunters to deal with the strange energy in the facility and experience some awful entities.  It felt a bit convenient for them to join the group with no idea what to do or how to act.  But Kit and Bran do go on the ghost hunt are pushed to their limit.  They help Raven and her team they make The Strident house as safe place for Luke and the other residence.  The book concludes with a happy ending for all of the characters and is a over all pretty good read.
